Drie jaar na de fantastische debuutplaat keren de Californiërs van Local Natives terug met ‘Hummingbird’, een even gevoelige als briljante opvolger.
Met ‘Gorilla Manor’ (2009) vestigt het viertal zich in het internationale circuit. Ze weten te overtuigen en mogen het voorprogramma verzorgen van klinkende namen als Arcade Fire en The National. Opportuniteiten die de band ontegensprekelijk beïnvloeden en mee vormen tot wat deze nu geworden is. In de kracht van de Canadezen en de precisie van de New Yorkers vinden Taylor Rice en zijn groep een stevige voedingsbodem en een enorme inspiratiebron. Het duurt niet lang voor Local Natives onder eigen naam de Verenigde Staten en Europa verovert. De vier artiesten nemen de duizend-en-één interessante ontmoetingen en ervaringen op hun pad heel erg in zich op en kruipen als rijkere mensen terug de studio in. Onder het toeziend oog van Aaron Dessner (The National) en alles wikkend en wegend, werken ze aan een tweede plaat. Met synthetisch slagwerk en opzwepende gitaren zijn Local Natives definitief vertrokken. Ze vinden hun plek waar de wegen van Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes en Fleetwood Mac kruisen en ontwijken met glans alle clichés. ‘Hummingbird’, dat bestempeld wordt als diepzinniger dan zijn voorganger, is het gedroomde volgende hoofdstuk in een veelbelovende carrière.
Na een concert op Pukkelpop deze zomer, waarvoor de verwachtingen hooggespannen zijn, gaan de heren in de herfst verder met hun wereldtournee, die in april van start gegaan is in Los Angeles.
