Deze zomer nog op Couleur Café én op Dranouter. Maar wie er ook al bij was in de uitverkochte ABClub, voorjaar 2010, die komt woensdag 3 november zeker ook weer intens genieten in de ABFlex. Want geloof ons, het stond ook zo in De Standaard:
'De Parijse Hindi Zahra gaf in een volle AB-club een sterk visitekaartje af. Dit is een nieuwkomer met persoonlijkheid en passie.
Hindi Zahra bracht onlangs haar debuutalbum Handmade uit op het jazzlabel Blue Note. Dat was eraan te horen: sinds de machtsgreep van Norah Jones worden jonge vrouwen met een mooie stem daar toch wat te enthousiast in het format van het smaakvolle chanson gestoken.
Zahra kan dat natuurlijk. Ze heeft een geweldige altstem en een intrigerende présence. Ze stamt af van Berbers en Touaregs, heeft ook wat uitdagende Franse flair over zich, maar hanteert vooral een lichaamstaal die ons soms deed denken aan performers uit het Oosten, die hun songs graag in de lucht tekenen met hun handen.
Aanvankelijk hield ze het rustig. In 'Try' riep ze Billie Holiday op en in 'Nanyi' verwees haar stemgebruik duidelijk naar Oum Khalsoum, de Egyptische diva. Maar toen al zagen we hoe ze met halfopen mond naar een gitaarsolo stond te luisteren, terwijl haar onderlijf meeschokte.
Even nog kregen we wat vriendelijke swing-songs en 'Beautiful tango', dat evolueerde van een poppenhuisliedje naar een meer bluesy kroegsong. Iedereen was overtuigd: mooi was ze, zingen kon ze. Maar had ze ook persoonlijkheid?
Ja dus. 'Kiss & thrills', op plaat het meest intrigerende nummer, trok het concert naar een donkere zone waar elektrische gitaren Zahra uitdaagden om fysiek alles los te gooien. De makke reggae van 'Oursoul' werd gecorrigeerd in een wilde rockfinale, en het meeslepende 'Set me free' voegde opzwepende chant en trance toe.
Maar alle ogen waren gericht op Zahra, die zich in steeds wildere bochten wrong. Haar armen, rijkelijk behangen met armbanden. Haar zwarte haren, die ze wild weg en weer schudde alsof ze bij Patti Smith in de leer was gegaan. Haar lichaam, dat de pentatonische klanken van de gitarist leek te omhelzen als een herinnering aan de muziek waarmee ze opgroeide.
Zahra wordt in de markt gezet als een smaakvolle salonzangeres, maar op het podium was ze zowel beauty als beest. Het ene moment liet ze het publiek liefjes meezingen met Bob Marleys 'Waiting in vain', het andere moment verloor ze haast de controle over zichzelf in de bluesy furie van 'Music'.
Haar toekomst oogt geweldig. Ze kan zowel op jazzpodia als op Rock Werchter staan en zal gensters slaan. Maar we zijn vooral nieuwsgierig om te zien of Hindi Zahra op haar volgende plaat haar veiligheidsgordel zal afdoen en haar passie en vuur echt de vrije loop laat.'
Extra voorprogramma: Root, onlangs nog indrukwekkend bij Jeff Beck en nu al terug op vraag van Hindi Zahra zelve (want Dominique deed ook al mee aan haar debuutcd!).
Root is inderdaad dat trio rond toetsenist Dominique Vantomme (Toots Thielemans, Louisiana Red, Therese Malenfant, An Pierlé, Laïs…). Geruggensteund door de ritmetandem Mirko Banovic (bassist van Arno en Arsenal) en Geert Roelofs grijpt Vantomme terug naar de jazzrock en de fusion van de jaren zeventig.
Verleenden tevens hun medewerking aan de plaat (bij Roughtrade): DJ Grazzhoppa, Uman, Eva & Kapinga Gysel (Zita Swoon), Leonie Gysel (Arsenal), en Laurent Maur (FR).
