Helmut Lotti bloedeerlijk in nieuwe Nederlandstalige liedjes
Er was een tijd waarin hij het volk onafgebroken verblijdde met aria’s en bolero’s, met walsen en hymnen, met American standards, schlagers en rock-‘n-roll-nummers. Kortom, met het mooiste van anderen.
Na twintig jaar trok hij eigenhandig het doek dicht. Het feest had lang genoeg geduurd, hij moest maar eens naar huis.
Duizend dagen heeft hij erover gedaan om het verleden uit te zweten, de invloeden van anderen een plek te geven en te ontdekken welke muziek het best en hevigst in zijn eigen ziel resoneert. Hij heeft getast, gekeken en geluisterd, maar vooral ook gevonden wat hij zocht: het mooiste van zichzelf.
Helmut Lotti is herboren. Zonder de warme pels van zijn idolen staat hij nu naakt op het podium, alsof het de eerste keer is. Met bloedeerlijke liedjes die het publiek een verrassende inkijk in zijn hart en zijn lijf bieden. En met een band die hem als een vlucht gieren omcirkelt, altijd op de loer om een aria te verscheuren.
Na de première in de Roma schreef De Standaard het volgende:
“ Voor Lotti is het ‘time to rock’ **** Dit is geen fluwelen entertainer meer, maar een Vlaamse bluesman die zich voortbeweegt in het kielzog van The Rolling Stones. Lotti staat niet meer te heupwiegen als een Vlaamse Elvis, maar zit helemaal vastgeketend in de sound van zijn band, die de groove als een verpletterende golf laat aanzwellen, met krijsende solo’s in een muur van chaos.
De sterkste momenten waren die waarin hij de song wàs, en vaak de meest uitgepuurde.
Na het concert ging hij signeren. Een dame van 65 sprak hem aan. ‘Ze zei dat ze het nog één keer met me wilde proberen’, zegt Lotti. ‘Als het deze keer niet goed was, zou ze nooit meer komen. ‘En je hebt me weggeblazen’, zei ze.”
