Noem hun muziek gerust Soul, Jazz, Reggae of Dub maar weet in elk geval dat Fat Freddy’s Drop simpelweg een van de origineelste bands te wereld is. Nieuw-Zeelands populairste exportproduct na de kiwi, bouwt zijn wereldwijde fanbase al jaren gestaag op, mede dankzij hun onnavolgbare, vaak geïmproviseerde liveoptredens.
Hun unieke mix van invloeden ontstond toen DJ Fitchie (Chris “Mu” Faiumu), trompettist Tony Chang (Toby Laing) en zanger Joe Dukie (Dallas Tamaira) op een blauwe maandag een dosis LSD slikten -met daarop de beeltenis van Gilbert Shelton’s Fat Freddy’s Cat- en vervolgens twee dagen aan een stuk bleven jammen.
Nadien vervolledigden ze hun line-up met een toetsenist (Dobie Blaze), gitarist (Jetlag Johnson), saxofonist (Chopper Reedz) en trombonist (Hopepa). Overal ter wereld slagen ze erin om het publiek te bekeren met hun “seven-headed soul”.
Op 7 oktober kunnen fans van Fat Freddy’s Drop in de AB terecht voor wat wel eens het live-feestje van het jaar kan worden.
