Patrick Stump, Andrew Hurley, Joe Troham en Pete Wentz richten in 2001 Fall Out Boy op. De vier vrienden leren elkaar kennen in de buitenwijken van Chicago waar ze aanvankelijk in allerlei metal-, emo- en underground hardcore groepen speelden. FOB slaat echter de weg in van de iets melodieuzere aanpak. Het viertal debuteert in 2003 met 'Evening With Your Girlfriend', een album dat niet in ons land te verkrijgen was. Met officiële debuutalbum 'Take This to Your Grave' blijft alles nog relatief bescheiden voor FOB. Toch wordt de groep opgepikt door Island Records. Op dit label komt in 2005 'From Under The Cork Tree' uit, een album dat kan pronken met successingles 'Sugar We’re Going Down' en natuurlijk 'Dance Dance'. Beide halen wereldwijd de top tien in verschillende hitlijsten. Het succes is overweldigend. De piek volgt als de groep wordt genomineerd voor de Grammy Awards in de categorie Best New Artist. Bevestigen doet FOB in 2007 probleemloos met vierde album 'Infinity on High'. Het brengt de groep naar podia van de grootste zomerfestivals van de wereld (denk maar aan Pukkelpop). Na de release van een live album, komt de groep in 2008 opnieuw in de schijnwerpers dankzij hun bijdrage aan een remixalbum voor The Cure. Maar belangrijker, met het album 'Folie à Deux' verschijnt er ook nieuw werk van FOB - zonder twijfel hun meest veelzijdige tot nu toe. 'Folie à Deux' is een nieuw belangrijk hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de groep. Het album is kritisch maar altijd hoopvol, en tegelijk experimenteel en lyrisch. Met zowel persoonlijke en politieke thema’s die aan bod komen toont dit album zeven jaar muzikale evolutie. Daarbij kon de groep rekenen op de hulp van figuren als Elvis Costello, Brendon Urie (Panic at The Disco), Lil Wayne en The Neptunes.
