◄◄ REWIND
In ‘07 lanceerde AB een tijdloze reeks: ◄◄ REWIND. Centraal in deze reeks staan Belgische artiesten die integraal ‘hun klassieker’ performen. Noem het een mijlpaal in hun carrière of meer zelfs: een sleutelplaat uit de Belgische popmuziek. Het gaat vaak om albums die – zij het niet uitsluitend – in het collectieve geheugen gegrift zijn. Noem het ankerpunten in het Belgische muzieklandschap. Zo zullen elk concertseizoen een aantal artiesten hun ‘pièce de résistance’ integraal spelen. Integraal? Jawel, exact in die volgorde zoals de artiest zijn/haar verhaal destijds (of nog steeds) wil(de) vertellen.
Met ◄◄ REWIND draagt AB tevens een steentje bij tot het activeren van het Belgische muzikale erfgoed. Passeerden reeds de revue: ‘Royalty In Exile’ (The Scabs), ‘Gorky’ (door Gorki), ‘1981-1984’ (The Neon Judgement), ‘The Kids’ (The Kids), ‘Nooit Meer Drinken’ (Raymond Van Het Groenewoud), ‘Op Zoek Naar Romantiek’ (Guido Belcanto) alsook ‘Jonge Helden’ van Arbeid Adelt!
Bij deze nieuwe worp staan drie Belgische klassiekers centraal: De Mens die hun sprankelend debuut ‘De Mens’ uit ’92 brengen, Luc Van Acker die ‘The Ship’ uit ’84 herneemt, alsook Wim Mertens met zijn miskend album ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ (’82).
Ook zij zullen – net als voorgaande artiesten – gelauwerd worden middels een officiële steenlegging in de Steenstraat naast AB als eerbetoon voor hun bijdrage aan de Belgische (pop)muziek.
◄◄ REWIND: De Mens plays ‘De Mens’ (1992)
“In ’11 treedt De Mens niet op. Want in 2012 wordt De Mens 20 jaar. Een feestjaar dat grondig wordt voorbereid…” … lazen we op de site van De Mens. En niets is minder waar, want een mooie aftrap van dit feestjaar wordt de integrale uitvoering van hun titelloos debuut uit ’92.
De tijdsperiode? Rocken in eigen taal was toen vooral not done. En daar bracht het triumviraat Noordkaap, Gorky (hun debuut verscheen eveneens in ’92) en De Mens begin jaren ’90 verandering in. De Mens was bij opstart een duo bestaande uit Michel De Coster (bas) en songwriter Frank Vander linden, destijds een gevierd Humo journalist. Zijn credo: “De taal waarin ik droom, is de taal waarin ik schrijf.”
De debuutsingle ‘Dit is mijn huis’ was meteen raak, net zoals de andere singles die uit de plaat komen: ‘Jeroen Brouwers (schrijft een boek)’ en het onsterfelijke ‘Irene’ (met die mooie zin “Niemand heeft ooit zo mooi / neen tegen mij gezegd”). Dit laatste nummer prijkt overigens in ‘100 op 1’, de lijst van Radio 1 met de beste Belgische nummers ever. Humo klonk destijds meteen lovend over dit debuut: “Opwindende Nederlandstalige rock zoals er maar weinig geproduceerd wordt in Vlaanderen”. Saillant slotdetail: ‘De Mens’ verscheen via Play That Beat! dat voornamelijk boy bands onder contract had.

Nadien, zoals de ◄◄ REWIND-traditie het inmiddels wil, wordt De Mens in de AB Club aan de tand gevoeld door De Standaard-journalist Wouter Van Driessche en Jan Delvaux (auteur van het in ’97 verschenen standaardwerk over de Belgische popmuziek ‘Big In Belgium. Het Verhaal Van De Belgische Pop’). Delvaux werkt momenteel aan de opvolger van dit boek (werktitel: ‘Belpop. De eerste vijftig jaar. 1960-2010’) dat dit najaar verschijnt.
◄◄ REWIND FACTS
Achter de vellen voor de opname van ‘De Mens’ zat niemand minder dan Frank Saenen. Frank Saenen speelde reeds in het kader van ◄◄ REWIND als drummer van The Scabs die in ‘07 ‘Royalty In Exile’ brachten. Franky Saenen heeft nog meer ◄◄ REWIND geschiedenis, want hij mepte ook strak op de trommels bij The Kids die in ‘08 door hun titelloos debuut stormden.
De lay out van de hoes van ‘De Mens’ – een close up van Michel De Coster en Frank Vander linden - was in handen van Jan Vanroelen. Jan Vanroelen trad in ’11 aan met Arbeid Adelt! waar ze integraal hun debuut ‘Jonge Helden’ brachten.
De vrouw die Frank Vander linden bezingt in ‘Irene’ bestaat. Meer zelfs: ze werd reeds gespot op verscheidene eerdere edities van ◄◄ REWIND.
