Cat’s Eyes is een duo dat bestaat uit de Canadese operasopraan en klassiek geschoolde multi-instrumentaliste Rachel Zeffira en Faris Badwan die we kennen als frontman van de Britse psychedelische rockers The Horrors. Waar beider werelden ontmoeten schrijven zij romantische meesterwerkjes met een afwijkende jaren ’60 popsound; denk aan Phil Spector. Eind februari verschijnt een eerste EP ‘Broken Glass’ en het volledige album volgt op 11 april. Het artwork was in de handen van Chris Cunningham die veel voor het Warp label werkt (Autechre, Aphex Twin) maar ook Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ van een videoclip voorzag. Een eerste live versie van ‘I Knew It Was Over’ werd in december gebracht in – geen grap - het Vaticaan.
Het Belgisch-Nederlandse duo Mon-O-Phone laat zich eigenlijk gewoon aanspreken als Mr & Ms Phono. Zo heet trouwens ook het onafhankelijk labeltje waarop ze hun prima debuut uitbrachten. De pers in de Lage Landen ging meteen overstag: Humo (***½): ‘Op hun debuut presenteert Mon-o-Phone een dozijn hoogst elektrische, geile, maar evenzeer sinistere en ontregelende songs met als ultieme troef de zang van Ms. Phono! Het is van de eersteling van The Germans geleden dat we nog zo’n vaderlands kopstootdebuut in onze maag kregen’! En het Nederlandse OOR magazine: ‘Rauwe, overstuurde rock en drummachine-ritmes leiden de weg, maar het zijn de indie-melodieën en de verleidelijke stem van Ciska die de nummers onweerstaanbaar maken’!
