Een herboren Cat Power baadt in het licht van 'Sun'
Sinds 1 januari 2006 mag u niet meer roken in publieke ruimtes, dus ook niet in AB. Na overleg tussen AB en de Federale Overheidsdienst Volksgezondheid, Veiligheid van de Voedselketen en Leefmilieu, zullen er de komende maanden enkele controles door de Volksgezondheid uitgevoerd worden in de AB.

"Here comes the sun” zingt Charlyn Marie Marshall in het titelnummer van haar negende album. Op de hoes een foto van een kortgewiekte Cat Power, toen 20 jaar, met een zelfverzekerde blik op oneindig. Een nieuw begin voor de met ‘herzschmerz’ getroebleerde Amerikaanse, net op tram 4 gestapt. De sfeer op ‘Sun’ blijft wel vertrouwd melancholisch maar het gebruik van synths, vocale effecten en elektronische hiphopbeats is nieuw en geeft de songs zowaar een ‘uplifting’ gevoel mee. Tekstueel rekent Power af met haar demonen, ze kampte met een alcoholprobleem, een bipolaire stoornis en kreeg daarbovenop een lastige relatiebreuk te verwerken. In ‘Cherokee’ probeert ze pijn met schoonheid te verzoenen, in ‘Ruin’ klaagt ze de westerse onverschilligheid aan terwijl ‘Manhattan’ verloren relaties aankaart. Zes jaar deed Chan Marshall erover om nieuwe, zelfgeschreven songs in te blikken, ‘Jukebox’ uit 2008 bestond volledig uit covers, en ‘Sun’ is het bewijs dat die tijd nodig was om zichzelf muzikaal en mentaal terug te vinden.
Met haar vorige passage in een uitverkochte AB verzamelde Power een pak sterren bij de recensenten. “Of hoe professioneel en emotioneel elkaar niet hoeven uit te sluiten” stond te lezen in De Morgen en dat zal deze keer niet anders zijn. Haar wispelturigheid en wilde haren ruilde ze in voor puurheid en authenticiteit, een Cat Power die baadt in het licht van ‘Sun’.
