Het in 2006 uitgebrachte 'Down On My Knees' werd het eerste wapenfeit voor Joy Olasumibo Ogunmakin, ons allen beter bekend als Ayo. Beïnvloed door zowel Bob Marley als Donny Hathaway heeft deze jonge Nigeriaanse artieste haar publiek kunnen veroveren met een eigenzinnige stijl en visie.
Haar eerste album, 'Joyful', ging in totaal meer dan 400.000 keer over de toonbank: helemaal uitzonderlijk voor een geheel van twaalf tracks die in amper vijf dagen opgenomen werden!
Het volgende album, 'Gravity At Last', werd opgenomen in de Compass Point-studio’s in Nassau op de Bahama’s. Net als de voorganger 'Joyful' was de schijf na vijf dagen klaar. Co-producer van dienst was Jay Newland, met onder andere Larry Campbell op gitaar en Lucky Peterson op klavier.
Ayo’s derde album werd genoemd naar haar eerste – nog ongeboren – dochter, 'Billie-Eve'. Deze CD klinkt beduidend gevoeliger en rijker dan zijn twee voorgangers en biedt een aantal samenwerkingen met enkele indrukwekkende gasten.
“Ik wou het album absoluut in New York opnemen. We konden kiezen uit twee studio’s: Avatar of Sear Sound. Uiteindelijk zijn we in Sear Sound beland, omdat die studio gezelliger is en vol positieve energie zit. Ik wou een kleiner team voor dit album om een intieme en authentieke sfeer te creëren. Ik heb de songs zelf geproducet, en heb kunnen werken met muzikanten als Gail-Ann Dorsey, bassiste bij David Bowie, Craig Ross, gitarist bij Lenny Kravitz, en Flemming Lauritsen, een old school-drummer met een uitgesproken Band of Gypsys-sound. De opnames in New York hebben vijf dagen geduurd, net als mijn twee eerste albums. Nadien ben ik nog vier tracks in Parijs gaan opnemen samen met twee van mijn tourmuzikanten. Op “It Hurts” en “Real Love” is -M- te gast op gitaar.”
Dit sterke album zeilt van reggae naar psychedelische rock over rasechte blues en soul. Ayo levert ook de meest aangrijpende en persoonlijke teksten die ze ooit geschreven heeft.
“Mijn derde album is openhartiger en eenvoudiger dan de twee vorige. Deze keer speel ik bijna geen akoestische gitaar, maar de elektrische gitaren geven het album een sterke rocksound. Men zegt vaak dat het eerste album het belangrijkste is, maar voor mij heeft Billie-Eve het meeste belang. Dit is mijn eigen productie die veel nieuwe deuren geopend heeft, en ik ben er heel trots op.”
Ayo blijft ver weg van sterallures en flashy featurings, maar op 'Billie-Eve' bewijst ze nog maar eens dat ze een echte artieste is, wiens oprechtheid in elke song tot haar recht komt.
Op 29 maart staat ze voor de derde keer in de Ancienne Belgique, na twee succesvolle optredens in 2007 en 2009.
