Blij eindelijk deze Israelische bassist/composer/zanger/arrangeur Avishai Cohen voor het eerst te AB te mogen verwelkomen. Cohen – geboren in Israel, maar in zijn tienerjaren verhuisd naar New York - begon zich op jonge leeftijd uit te leven als pianist, maar verkoos als snel de bas boven de toetsen. Daar zat zijn bewondering voor de legendarische bassist Jaco Pastorius voor iets tussen. Uit den brode speelde hij in NYC in latin jazz bands en belandde zo bij het trio van pianist Danilo Perez. In de periode ’96-’03 maakte hij deel uit van zowel Chick Corea’s trio als sextet. Onder zijn vleugels (en op diens label) bracht Cohen tevens zijn eerste albums uit als bandleider. Sinds ’03 leidt Cohen zijn eigen Avishai Cohen trio en in tussentijd speelde Cohen ook mee met klasbakken als Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove en zelfs Alicia Keys. In '05 keerde Cohen terug naar zijn thuisland. Niet verwonderlijk dus dat op zijn jongste albums steeds prominenter de invloeden doorklinken van zijn kleurrijke roots: "de Sefardisch-mediterrane cultuur van zijn moeder en de Oost-Europees-joodse afkomst van zijn vader. Zijn Joodse roots, zijn New Yorkse ervaringen en de hernieuwde blootstelling aan de Israelische actualiteit" (VPRO). Zijn jongste album uit '09 ('Aurore') verscheen via het befaamde Blue Note-label. Begin 2011 volgt zijn nieuwe album 'Seven Seas' (eveneens via Blue Note). Te AB treedt hij op als trio.
Omwille van familiale redenen ziet percussionist Itamar Doari zich voor de hele Europese tournee genoodzaakt te laten vervangen in het trio met Avishai Cohen. Vervanger van dienst wordt drummer Amir Bresler.
