Opzwepende, originele indiepop met een hoek af

Steek ‘An Awesome Wave’ van ∆ (alt-J) in uw draaier, en driehoeksmeetkunde wordt op slag een stuk sexier. Eat that, meneer Devlieghere uit een niet nader genoemd college! Sorry, irrelevant (wiskundetrauma’s zijn hardnekkig), maar het moest er even uit.
Hun eclectische debuut stuitert alle kanten op, flarden TV on the Radio, Yeasayer, Four Tet, Burial en Foals vermengen zich met Fleet Foxiaanse, van helium doorweekte harmonieën. En toch kunnen we hun stijl niet meteen thuiswijzen, en dat kunnen de recensenten blijkbaar ook niet want het regent nieuwe stijlnamen voor deze uiterst aanstekelijke muzikale hutsepot zoals ‘folkstep’, ‘jumpfolk’, ‘tripfolk’ of ‘folktronica’. Dat laatste dekt volgens de vier uit Cambridge nog het best de ingenieuze lading.
Inspiratie voor de vaak cryptische teksten haalt frontman Joe Newman uit films (‘Matilda’ verwijst naar Luc Besson’s Léon), literatuur (Hubert Selby Jr.'s Last Exit To Brooklyn in ‘Fitzpleasure’) en traumatische ervaringen (‘Ms’ rekent af met liefdesperikelen) met tragiek als constante factor. En toch klinken de songs niet als soundtrack van een existentiële crisis, het blijft poppy… Unieke, opzwepende indiepop met een hoek af.
“Ijle stemmen en ondeugend gitaarspel, een nieuwe favoriet” en “een sterk staaltje musiceren” schreef Indiestyle na hun concert in Botanique (support van Big Deal op 1 maart ’12) dus live zit het ook helemaal moustache!
