Qui sont ces Japanese Popstars ? Originaire d'Irlande du Nord, le groupe se compose de Gary Curran, Declan 'Decky' McLaughlin et Gareth Donoghue. Leur Ă©lectro hoquetante leur fait cependant faire le tour du monde (en passant, eh oui, par le Japon !).
Leur second album, 'Controlling Your Allegiance' (distribué chez nous via Virgin/EMI), a finalement vu le jour cet été et a été immédiatement sacré « album de la semaine » par De Morgen, avec 4 étoiles. Les remarquables contributions vocales qui l'émaillent y sont sans aucun doute pour beaucoup. S'y cÎtoient notamment Jon 'Blues Explosion' Spencer, Robert Smith des Cure, Tom Smith des Editors, Lisa Hannigan, Green Velvet, James Vincent McMorrow ou encore Morgan Kibby.
Mais mĂȘme sans ces divines interventions au chant, The Japanese Popstars valent en eux-mĂȘmes le dĂ©tour. On les classera volontiers aux cĂŽtĂ©s de Underworld, Soulwax ou The Chemical Brothers. Le mĂȘme Morgen disait de leur album « un disque variĂ©... un son qui sonne trĂšs dĂ©but des annĂ©es 90 sans jamais donner l'impression d'ĂȘtre datĂ© ... un groupe qui parvient Ă combiner ces rythmes nerveux et trĂ©pidants Ă de vĂ©ritables chansons dont on sent d'emblĂ©e qu'elles peuvent tenir la route sans grand tralala. »
