Mulatu se produit la veille de son 70e anniversaire.
Certains se font appeler Duke (Ellington), King (Tubby) ou encore Pres (Lester Young). Ă bientĂŽt 70 ans, Mulatu Astatke en est restĂ© Ă Mulatu Astatke, mais il est bel et bien considĂ©rĂ© comme le pĂšre du jazz Ă©thiopien. Le rĂ©alisateur Jim Jarmusch a utilisĂ© sa musique dans le film âBroken Flowersâ tandis que Nas & Damian Marley ont exploitĂ© le sample de son trĂšs reconnaissable 'Yegelle Tezeta', une de ses chansons des annĂ©es 70 que Nicolas Jaar a Ă©galement remixĂ©e avec sa lenteur caractĂ©ristique.
Sa musique offre une fusion incomparable entre pop, modern jazz, musique traditionnelle Ă©thiopienne, rythmes latinos, reggae caribĂ©en et â nous y sommes presque â afro-punk frĂ©tillant. Astatke est tout autant pianiste, organiste, vibraphoniste, percussionniste que compositeur et arrangeur et fut en son temps le premier Ă©tudiant africain Ă ĂȘtre diplĂŽmĂ© du cĂ©lĂšbre Berklee College of Music. Il a Ă©galement collaborĂ© avec l'un des plus grands compositeurs amĂ©ricains, la lĂ©gende jazz Duke Ellington.
