'Down On My Knees', sorti en 2006, a Ă©tĂ© lâacte de naissance musical de Joy Olasumibo Ogunmakin, mieux connue sous le nom dâAyo. Aussi bien influencĂ©e par Bob Marley que par Donny Hathaway, cette jeune artiste dâorigine nigĂ©riane a su dâemblĂ©e se prĂ©senter au public avec un univers Ă part.
Son premier CD, 'Joyful', se vendra à plus de 400.000 exemplaires. Un exploit inédit pour cette collection de douze titres enregistrés en cinq jours.
Le second album, 'Gravity At Last', est enregistré aux studios Compass Point de Nassau, dans les Bahamas. Comme son prédécesseur, il est finalisé en cinq jours. Jay Newland le co-réalise avec notamment Larry Campbell aux guitares et Lucky Peterson aux claviers.
Son troisiĂšme album va porter le nom de son enfant Ă naĂźtre, sa premiĂšre fille, 'Billie-Eve'. Un disque plus complexe et plus riche que ses deux prĂ©dĂ©cesseurs, avec quelques invitĂ©s prestigieux et des compositions qui privilĂ©gient lâĂ©motion Ă fleur de peau.
« Je voulais absolument quâon enregistre lâalbum Ă New York, et on avait le choix entre deux studios, Avatar ou Sear Sound. Jâai choisi le second qui est confortable et plein de bonne Ă©nergie. Jâai voulu une Ă©quipe resserrĂ©e, histoire de faire un retour aux sources. Jâai realisĂ© les chansons moi-mĂȘme, et comme musiciens jâai choisi Gail-Ann Dorsey, qui joue de la basse avec David Bowie, Craig Ross, le guitariste de Lenny Kravitz, et Flemming Lauritsen Ă la batterie, un drummer old school avec un son trĂšs Band Of Gypsys. AprĂšs les enregistrements new-yorkais qui ont durĂ© cinq jours, comme pour mes deux prĂ©cĂ©dents albums, je suis retournĂ© en studio Ă Paris faire quatre chansons avec deux de mes musiciens de tournĂ©e, dont âIt Hurtsâ et âReal Loveâ, sur lesquelles -M- est venu jouer de la guitare ».
La couleur musicale de cet album puissant va du reggae au rock psychĂ©, avec des passages par le blues et la soul la plus profonde, le tout surplombĂ© de paroles bouleversantes, personnelles, les plus intenses quâAyo ait jamais Ă©crit.
« Ce troisiĂšme album est plus direct, plus rĂȘche, plus simple. Il a ce feeling rock Ă cause des guitares Ă©lectriques, car contrairement Ă mes deux prĂ©cĂ©dents disques, jâai jouĂ© trĂšs peu de guitare acoustique. Je sais quâon dit souvent que câest le premier disque qui est le plus important, mais pour moi câest celui-lĂ . Billie-Eve mâa ouvert des nouvelles portes, je lâai rĂ©alisĂ© moi-mĂȘme, et jâen suis trĂšs fiĂšre ».
Loin des modes, sans featuring showbiz ni star attitude, Ayo sây impose du premier au dernier morceau comme une artiste universelle, une chanteuse dont la sincĂ©ritĂ© sonne comme une Ă©vidence.
Elle sera le 29 mars pour la troisiÚme fois à l'Ancienne Belgique aprÚs des passages remarqués en 2007 et 2009.
