Exquisite jazz double bill at the intersection of Black Lives Matter and Afrofuturism
Clarinet player, pianist, composer and singer Angel Bat Dawid is well on her way to becoming the grande dame of the Chicago jazz scene.
Her latest epic Requiem for Jazz rubs up against the cosmic soundscapes of Pharoah Sanders and the Afrofuturism of Sun Ra. Right off the bat, Pitchfork gave the album an 8 out of 10. The Guardian oracled: âDawid is one of the most vital avant-garde artists of her time.â

Irreversible Entanglements hits you like a sledgehammer and sounds like the modern musical equivalent of Black Lives Matter as it could be heard on albums like New York Art Quartet & Imamu Amiri Baraka (1965, ESP) by the New York Art Quartet of the same name and Archie Sheppâs BlasĂ© (1969, BYG Actuel) or Poem For Malcolm (1969, BYG Actuel). It was no coincidence then that Irreversible Entanglements came into being during a 2015 protest bearing the banner Musicians Against Police Brutality.
