The story of how UB40 came into being sounds like one told at a bar after a few too many drinks, one that changes every time it is told. A group of mates without work (but with a predilection for reggae) get into a fight, one almost loses an eye. What would you spend the compensation on? Instruments, of course! The band named themselves, very appropriately, after the British 'Unemployment Benefit' (UB).
The result? Far from doing nothing! Worldwide, the British reggae collective has released at least 18 (!) studio albums. The original line-up – with Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue – managed to convert a good number of those albums into gold and platinum, sold about 70 million copies worldwide, and spent quite a lot of time in the upper regions of the charts.
Will U B there? AB has the actual founding fathers of UB40 paying a visit on May 8. ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘Cherry Oh Baby’ will have never sounded so good.
