Despite the AB’s closed doors, our sound engineer Tom is still occupied with ‘audio’. More specifically with 'acoustic phonetics’, because you could say that his www.westflemishforbehinners.be falls under that banner.
As a young teenager he almost thought he would go on to study Germanic languages, but he ended up opting for the musical path after all. He never lost his interest in language though. He first heard a ‘phoneticism’ in a rehearsal room in the ‘90s: Noise Means Never. Ever since that discovery, he has kept his ears pricked for internal as well as external sounds.
But he also often just pulls them out of thin air. For example, ‘Spit Means Regret’ came about in the AB Club during a show where he was responsible for the sound mix on stage. The English-speaking singer of the band jumped into the audience, spat on the ground and began to improvise about it.
