On April 20, Daymé Arocena, DJ dÉbruit and Charlie Inman will take you along on a journey via a number of world-music gems… all while nice and cosy in AB!
Charlie Inman’s documentary ‘Havana Cultura Rumba Sessions: La Clave’ introduces you to the roots of the Cuban rumba. Interviews with a number of pivotal figures in the rumba scene reveal the stirring history of its origins, but also its evolution. How have contemporary musicians reworked its traditional, sometimes even spiritual, drums of the working class into new, exciting beats that suit the spirit of our current age? The world première took place late last year at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, the Belgian première has been set aside for, that’s right, the Ancienne Belgique!
Protagonist and leading lady of the evening? Daymé Arocena, a 24-year-old Cuban talent who has musical blood running through her veins. Her career kicked off at the young age of 8 and, along the way, Arocena got picked up by Gilles Peterson - DJ, producer and boss of Brownswood Recordings – who will release the successor to her debut album ‘Nueva Era’ later this year on that same label. Her relaxed, jazzy vocal sound is combined with the typical rhythms of Afro-Cuban instruments. This should be fun!
To conclude this journey around the world, DJ dÉbruit immerses you in his experimental soundscapes that bridge both time and space. Xavier Thomas, aka dÉbruit, combines a worldly sound with electronic influences. The French DJ appeared just recently at Europalia, to launch his exuberant live show 'Istanbul', on April 20 he provides a cracking conclusion to the Havana Club Rumba Sessions!
