For our Guestlist podcast, Stubru presenter Rik De Bruycker takes a look behind the scenes at AB. This time he has done so live from BRDCST, AB’s most adventurous festival. He spoke to Arlen Dilsizian (Nyege Nyege) and DJ Marcelle about the ‘globalisation’ of music.
These days, the most exciting beats come not from the West but from Uganda. That’s where Arlen Dilsizian and Derek Debru have been running ‘Nyege Nyege’ since 2016 - a label, a festival and residency for outsider music from East Africa. From traditional field recordings, acholi music and singeli to punk, noise and industrial. The main thing is that it should bang and grind.
At BRDCST, Rik De Bruycker spoke to label owner and founder Arlen about festival productions in Africa, post-colonialism and the music scene and nightlife in Kampala.
The Dutch DJ Marcelle is the only foreign resident DJ at Nyege Nyege festival. In Guestlist she talks about the importance of punk in her youth, collecting mugs, the tedium of modern DJ culture and her new album "DJ Marcelle: The Musical".
