Enjoy free, Dutch-language, lunchtime concerts during Boterhammen in de Stad. Stick around afterwards, because between 2 and 7 pm there is plenty to do on the AB summer terrace thanks to Timiss, MetX and Darna! In the evening, Feeërieën offers more free live music.
Monday 22 August
West Flemish singer-songwriter Flip Kowlier will kick off Boterhammen in de Stad. Afterwards, Timiss will be organising Tricks initiations & performances (tricking is a very cool form of acrobatics), (video) games, clothes & plant exchange, and more on the AB summer terrace!
In the evening, you’ll discover 'The End Of Infinity' - a unique project that unites classical and electronic music - and ‘Naima Joris plays Daniel Johnston’: a touching tribute to the musical outsider.
Tuesday 23 August
Maaike Ouboter will move you to tears with her silky smooth voice and catchy lyrics. Afterwards, the AB summer terrace will be all about dance and hiphop culture! We learn to jam with our bodies during funk, dancehall and K-pop initiations, dance-offs and jams. Take part in the pop-up quiz and win small prizes! There are also fun stalls for clothes exchange, accessories and more.
In the evening, Abel Ghekiere will present one of the most beautiful Belgian albums of 2021. Followed by the soulful and world-famous Eddie Chacon!
Wednesday 24 August
Wednesday afternoon is for kids and families, because Kapitein Winokio will be taking over! The AB Summer Terrace provides super-fun children's entertainment.
In the evening it's the turn of Nyati Mayi & The Astral Synth Transmitters. Expect free form music with echoes of nineties folk, dub, Fela Kuti and Sun Ra. Mulatu Astatke soulmate and living legend Hailu Mergia will also be gracing us with his presence!
Thursday 25 August
Lucky Fonz III, our neighbour from up north, provides a healthy dose of humour and quirky lyrics on Thursday. Afterwards, Darna and the MetX-musicians will immerse you in their universe of rousing (brass) horns, (West) African rhythms, cosmopolitan dance moves and a pop-up parade. Join us on the AB summer terrace for music workshops, dance and a closing performance! Find out all the info and register via this website.
In the evening, Brik Tu-Tok brings funky sounds to life with cassettes and crafted objects. Afterwards, Voetvolk/Liesbeth Gruwez promises an unforgettable ‘dance meets concert’ experience with 'Into The Open'.
Friday 26 August
We celebrate the last day of Boterhammen in de Stad with a surprise act! After the performance, Timiss will organise a nineties style Block Party on the AB summer terrace. Everything revolves around local community and talent! Think: DJ sets, dance sessions, basketball, comedy, photo booth, beauty corner & all kinds of fun stalls.
And in the evening it's party time! On The Corner Records presents an evening full of afro-house, kuduro and lingala with Alai K, Guedra Guedra and Coco Em.
The AB Summer terrace with Timiss, MetX and Darna
The AB Summer Terrace lives and breathes thanks to Brussels-based organisations Timiss, MetX and Darna. Timiss has a passion for art & culture and works for and with the local street community. It unites cultures, supports grassroots initiatives and works to improve the accessibility of spaces for creation and representation in the cultural and artistic sector.
MetX experiments with accessible and improvised musical performances. The intention? To have a group of musicians (amateur and pro) play together with minimal preparation. And preferably in the public space!
Darna is the Flemish-Moroccan cultural centre. Darna aims to promote dialogue and cultural interaction between the Flemish and Moroccan communities in Brussels and the rest of Flanders.
