“I know very little about Turkish pop psych funk progressive music. I picked up a Barış Manço CD when I was on tour in Istanbul decades ago and that opened a world for me. I realized that the psychedelic funk explosion I grew up with was truly a worldwide phenomena and I presumed there must be more that I had yet to encounter.
The songs on this playlist don’t ALL come from that era—an era that was possibly a legacy of Turkey as a place of hippie pilgrimage—but there does seem to be a long and ever spreading family tree of influence...and the music is fantastic. Turkey is currently under the sway of a right wing populist, but this music tells us that the beating funky soul of Anatolia might survive this dark night, reawaken, and surprise us all.” DB
