100% vintage gospel, funk & soul. Think: Sharon Jones, The Meters & Mavis Staples
There are still certainties in this constantly changing world. The Staples Jr. Singers still make delicious, honest and pure soul. If you close your eyes while listening to their music, you imagine yourself at Sunday Mass in a church in New York's Harlem. This is a timeless dash of African-American culture.
Did you already know this about the Staples Jr. Singers?
- Their name is a reference to The Staple Singers (whose Mavis Staples recently impressed at AB).
- The band was formed in 1971 with the 3 siblings: Anie, A.R.C and Edward Brown. Then 11, 12 and 13 years old. They began playing shows in and around their hometown of Mississippi. 4 years later their brother Ronell joined them, who was only then finally big enough to hold a bass guitar.
- In 1975 they released the record "When do we get paid." Apart from the roughly € 700 that collectors will pay for an original copy, the album is 100% vintage gospel and soul.
- This record has been reissued by David Byrnes' Luaka Bop label. They have recovered the original records and remixed them into a beautiful record. Because it was recorded so long ago, this record is a real time machine that takes you back to the old glory. With this old glory they are going on Tour. They already played at the famous discovery festival Le Guess Who? in Utrecht.
- On November 14, the Brown family aka Staples Jr. singers will come to Brussels for a show in the AB. Ideal for a soul/blues fan in the mood for a delicious, pure and soulful nostalgia trip.
Convinced? Then head to the AB Club on November 14, which will undoubtedly be the warmest spot in Brussels that night.
