She may be having a hit at the moment with Crookers (‘Cooler Couleur’) but the French singer Yelle (née Julie Budet) has done it before by herself. With, for example, ‘Ce Jeu’ in 2008 (with a cameo from the fine baritone of Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na), her 2007 debut ‘Pop-Up’ and the singles ‘Je Veux Te Voir’ and ‘A Cause Des Garçons’. Imagine a musical hybrid of lollypop and Kelis but then with her beat provider, DJ Grand Marnier behind the scenes. She also works with such artists as Katy Perry and she is currently hard at work in the studio on the follow-up to ‘Pop-Up’. Get a sneak preview at an exclusive ABClub on Wednesday 17 November.
Geneva Jacuzzi is a protégé of Ariel Pink's (thus providing the artwork for his albums) and as such she produced a big-city mix of pure electro-pop and sleazy indie-trash. Or: how Madonna would sound if she had never made it out of the gutters of New York. Personally, she likes to refer to a rather strange period in music history when Morris Day and DeBarge topped the hit-lists. Weird and attractive!
