Ultimate pop band verging on breakthrough
Pop music was invented for bands like Whitney, from Chicago. Everyone would seem to agree, for a change: Pitchfork went for a 8.3 (or a review in the very rare category of ‘Best New Music’) and De Standaard praised them with **** and rightly wrote that ‘Whitneys liedjes over verliefdheid en hartzeer zijn zo aandoenlijk als een kind dat bellen blaast.’
The crux of Whitney has been going strong for a while. Guitarist Mark Kakacek and drummer Julien Ehrlich already shared a past in Smith Westerns, and Ehrlich drummed with Unknown Mortal Orchestra in previous days. ‘We’re going to get famous as fuck’ Ehrlich says before both of them erupt into a fit of laughter. The fool tells the truth?
