Musical octopus & Bazart member mesmerizes with ‘Aura’
Over the past year, singer, songwriter and musical-octopus Oliver Symons has revealed himself to be one of our biggest Belgian pop-talents, with tentacles in Dutch-language phenomenon Bazart, Humo’s Rock Rally-laureate ’14 Warhola (the real surname of pop-art artist Andy Warhol) and as co-producer of indie-pop queen Tsar B.
With Warhola’s debut EP ‘Aura’ (Pias), Symons and comrades changed up a gear this spring. In doing so they managed to capture a cartload of review stars and praise from as far afield as New York, from leading digital music mag Pigeons & Planes.
The AB Club release-show on April 6 was masterful (***1/2 HUMO) and so were the words of De Morgen reviewer Gunther Van Assche: “zwaarmoedige scifi-pop waarbij James Blake en SOHN de verfborstel mee lijken vast te houden.” With Tsar B, Vuurwerk, Glints, Soldier’s Heart, Hydrogen Sea and Warhola at the forefront, there is more than enough fresh national talent turning up to populate the electro-pop peak where Oscar And The Wolf and Bazart already hang out!
