London saxophonist whose smooth soundscapes are reshaping UK rap
Malik Venner, better known by his stage name Venna, is a British jazz saxophonist from South London. He won a Grammy Award at the age of 21(!) for his work on Burna Boy's Alarm Clock. His latest EP EQUINOX features Knucks, Yussef Dayes and Masego. Venna is a pioneer in modern jazz: he seamlessly blends rap with melodic jazz beats.
His debut album Venology was released in 2021. Between the honeyed, saxophone-led melodies and the hazy, heady basslines, Venna smoothly navigates jazz-laced soundscapes and reworks them into his own edgy productions with laid-back charm.
Where are we going? is the title of one of his brilliant singles. The answer? To AB Club, duh!
