Flamenco Nuevo - star guitarist & ensemble!
Flamenco nuevo? Flamenco pur sang! With quite some jazz and fusion influences. Phenomenal too!
Tomatito comes from a fertile musical nest. In the Spain of flamenco and guitar of course. Grandfather and father were both famed as 'El tomate'. A number of uncles also had richly filled careers. You'd be hard pressed to find a more musical environment.
José Fernandez Torres was born in 1958 in Almeria. He quickly grew up to be the next talented child in the family, came into contact with grandmasters like Paco De Lucia and El Lebrijano and so very soon became 'Tomatito.'
Tomatito was immensely successful for almost 20 years, especially at the side of the legendary Camaron de la Isla, until he died tragically in 1992.
In the meantime, Tomatito is already 10 CDs into his career, with honours such as a César for the soundtrack to the excellent Tony Gatlif film Vengo, plus two Grammys!
Under his own name and with his own ensemble, Tomatito continues to display his virtuoso and broad-minded flamenco skills. In a sold-out concert hall in Bruges in early 2012, now in the ABFlex (with room to sit, stand and dance!).
