‘The Wire Primer: Subterranean Metal’ with Edwin Pouncey
AB in association with The Wire
One of the series in not-to-be-missed British magazine The Wire is ‘The Primer’. In it, a journalist, musician, or writer delves into an unapparent subject. As they themselves describe it: A bi-monthly guide to the core recordings of a particular artist or genre.
In collaboration with The Wire, we'll be extending this series live by inviting the writers to Huis23.
We start off with Edwin Pouncey and his piece on ‘Subterranean metal’ (which appeared in The Wire 252 of February 2005).
Edwin Pouncy is musical journalist, musician with Pestrepeller and a notorious British underground figure, he wrote in the ’80's for the likes of Sounds and NME, and more recently he delved into subjects ranging from Japanese Psychedelica to Jamaican dancehall tapes and from La Monte Young via Motown to Todd Rundgren for The Wire.
Pouncey is also known as cartoonist Savage Pencil. Under this moniker, he has made artwork for the likes of Sonic Youth, Big Black, The Fall, Rocket From The Crypt, Masonna, Royal Trux, Coil, Current 93, Skullflower, Sunn O))),….
In his The Primer, bearing the title ‘Subterranean Metal’, Pouncey takes us along on a personal selection of albums from rock’s most extreme subculture. From Grindcore drones and Scandinavian Blackmetal to the more electronic variants and the heavier improvisational music - so from Earth, Goatsnake and Neurosis to Merzbow or John Zorn (Painkiller, Naked City).
The perfect introduction to an evening of Amenra and Church Of Ra by one of the specialists in the genre.
There will also be a The Wire merchandise stand present.
