7:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY… NATHALIE JUDGE (Matador Records) & JAN DE MARS (Beggars Banquet)
7:00 pm PRE-LISTENING SESSION: JASON LYTLE ‘Yours Truly, The Commuter’
7:00 pm THE NEW WINE
Fellow countrymen of Erlend Øye and so also 100% Norwegian. In other words: The New Wine was invited by The Whitest Boy Alive to warm up the entire European tour. They call themselves a mix of The Whitest Boy Alive, Phoenix and Italo-disco. In the first place, we hear danceable synth-pop on their MySpace. We're curiously awaiting their first concert on Belgian soil...
7:45 pm THE INVISIBLE
Yet another debut for Belgian soil: that of English trio The Invisible. What a debut it is too! This trio consists of members of the likes of Matthew Herbert, Zongamin and also Polar Bear. In London they were firstly identified with the F-IRE Collective, a pool of musicians with a predilection for avant/improv jazz rooted in African rhythms. Their latest singles ‘Monster Waltz’ and also ‘London Girl’ received fine remixes from the very start, from Micachu & The Shapes (see further) and also Hot Chip. Their full-length debut will be released this spring via Accidental Records, the label of electronica-pioneer Matthew Herbert - who also did the honours, production-wise. "The English TV On The Radio", we read somewhere. Or also: "groovily insistent, electro soul-pop that recalls Scritti Politti, Talking Heads, Arthur Russell, Bilal, Robert Wyatt, Prince and latter-day Radiohead.".
8:45 pm MICACHU AND THE SHAPES
Watch the AB Session of Micachu here.
During Domino, we're happy to stake our Win For Life on this honestly fucking exciting English band Micachu and The Shapes. Micachu is the alter-ego of Mica Levi aka Micachu, barely 21 years old and producer annex MC. The Shapes form her backing band and Matthew Herbert was a fan from the start. So their yet to be released debut ‘Jewellery’ - was also produced by Dr. Rockit aka Herbert aka Matthew Herbert Big Band. The tracks - ‘Golden Phone’, ‘Just In Case’,… - on MySpace are simply addictive and indestructible. Basically: they play on endless repeat here in the office. Mica is also DJ & MC and has been active in London's grime scene for quite a while. Just check out her mix-tape (free downloadable via her MySpace). In fact Micachu is pure pop but smells like M.I.A, unorthodox beats and pure pig-headedness. In short: perfect stuff for Domino.
10:00 pm THE WHITEST BOY ALIVE
The Whitest Boy Alive - residing in Berlin - is now no longer a noble stranger. That has, in the first place, to do with the remarkable appearance (large glasses, red hair) of Erlend Øye from Bergen (Norway), who was also present at Domino in ’03, by the way, and who's also a member of Kings Of Convenience - from whom a new album is expected this spring. But first there is the soon to be released ‘Rules’, the second album from Whitest Boy… Erlend's electronic slacker funk project meanwhile appears to have become his main occupation. You've never heard of Erlend Øye? That's bad! Øye is namely the mighty voice behind Röyksopp's hit ‘Poor Leno’. So now we've put that right. Both StuBru and Pukkelpop have already fallen for them in the past. The audience especially falls for them live, because The Whitest Boy… is primarily a live-band and their performances are always a party. And a party is just the thing that a person needs in times of crisis.
