A loud and clear-cut DIY* double bill. Or rather two young bands from L.A. that have worked on an own unique sound, for years already, each in their own way.
Foursome Abe Vigoda recently released their first CD 'Skeleton' (on Bella Union via V2) and this quartet comes from a 'background of No Wave, Pop, Darkness and Hope'. Their musical approach is based upon, wait for it: 'instantaneousness'. With as direct references: Captain Beefheart, My Bloody Valentine, Reggaeton...
The Mae Shi recently finally released their firstborn on Moshi Moshi (also via V2 too). The CD is called, take note: 'HLLLYH'. Last year they were at the Norwegian Oya festival after which our man in Norway loudly noted: 'I was completely cheered by THE MAE SHI. Pronounce it like 'de meisje' (in dutch) and remember: unbelievably cute, bursting with pleasure to play, lets say Cold War Kids with fine witticisms - this American quartet still takes risks live and that remains exciting due to their exuberant folly.'
* Since the years of Punk, DIY has stood for Do It Yourself (but of course you already knew that!?)
Extra support act to this already impressive double-bill will be Anathallo, also from America. Started out in the 'indie alt pop entourage of Chicago', and have just finished the extremely fine and atmospheric 'Canopy Glow' CD. Anathallo sounds like the missing link between - euh - Tortoise and Fleet Foxes, so not really punk, but still striking and excellent!
