The sixties meet dazzling modern psychedelica
BRDCST is AB’s outstanding indoor spring festival spotlighting musical boundlessness. The name is a direct reference to the retro futuristic electronica-pop of the English band Broadcast that released inspiring albums like ‘Haha Sound’ and ‘Noise Made By The People’ over the past decade. Artists who feel strongly about musical innovation form the focal point for BRDCST. Our musical gut feeling will do the rest.
THE LEMON TWIGS (us)
The Lemon Twigs, the band encompassing New York teen brothers Michael and Brian D’Addario, single-handedly make the sixties hip again! With their excellent debut ‘Do Hollywood’ (via 4AD) – recorded by Jonathan Rado (Foxygen) – the brothers return to the golden pop/psychedelica of The Beatles, the fantastic surf-rock of The Beach Boys, and even the bon vivant-piano of Elton John.
Sound like pop history under a thick layer of dust? Quite the opposite! Just read over the reviews: words like ‘refreshing’ and ‘genuine’ perfectly describe this ADHD pop-opera – including xylophone solos and carnivalesque exploits. They also have an impeccable live reputation whereby the two multi-instrumentalists often switch roles… which leads to a gigantic energetic whirlwind on stage. Must-see!
VANISHING TWIN (uk)
Not bad: Vanishing Twin instigator Cathy Lucas encompassed herself with an unusual collection of conceptual musicians who love the sorts of sounds you don’t come across every day, members of bands like Raime and Floating Points. The result: album ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ that was released via the generally worldly Soundway Records. Even Gilles Peterson fell for the combination of psychedelic melodies, old organs, spacey sounds, trashy percussion and dreamy vocals. Drummer Malcolm Cato (see too: DJ Shadow, The Gaslamp Killer,…) as producer topped the whole thing off wonderfully. Oh, and: Above all, we reckon that Vanishing Twin has a lot in common with the band Broadcast. And wasn’t that the source of our festival name?
