Non-nippon electronic dance revelation
The Japanese Popstars? They're Gary Curran, Declan 'Decky' McLaughlin and Gareth Donoghue from North Ireland! But they tour the entire world with their brilliantly jingly electro (and yup, also in Japan!)
Their second CD was finally released this summer: 'Controlling Your Allegiance' (here via Virgin/EMI) and it immediately earned a '4* CD of the week' in De Morgen, not in the least due to the remarkable vocal contributions by Jon 'Blues Explosion' Spencer, Robert 'The Cure' Smith and Tom 'The Editors' Smith, aside Lisa Hannigan, Green Velvet, James Vincent McMorrow, Morgan Kibby...
But The Japanese Popstars are already impressive, even without all those divine vocals! To be situated aside Underworld, Soulwax, The Chemical Brothers… The very same De Morgen then also spoke of a 'versatile album... a sound that is very early-nineties but at the same time never sounds dated... a band that manages to couple those nervous, agitated rhythms with real songs - that instantly give the impression that they'd stand their own even without any bells or whistles.'
Though, of course, you'll be there precisely for those (deci)bells and (whimsical) whistles. Right!?
