Latest issue Hive Mind shows the band to be an unstoppable force in R&B land – De Morgen
Their latest LP, ‘Hive Mind’, has The Internet treating us to a series of self-assured, old-school seventies funk, appealing songs.
The band – that came about as an offshoot of Tyler, The Creator’s Odd Future collective – revealed itself to be a mature neo-soul, R&B band with ‘Ego Death’, the predecessor to ‘Hive Mind’. They bagged a Grammy nomination and made their breakthrough to the general public. In the year that followed, it was the solo work of the band members that received the most focus. The feeling of coming together again and working on a new album was what formed the basis of ‘Hive Mind’, says singer Syd: ‘After making a few songs we realized that we really want to use this album to live by example and promote camaraderie amongst young black people. We realized that we're the only band of our kind. And we want to really solidify ourselves as that, as the best.’
