The Art Of Rap, Something From Nothing, DVD launch
A film by Ice-T, 2012, DVD, 106 min, ov nl subtitles
Hip-hop didn’t invent anything, hip-hop reinvented everything
“The Art of Rap is the first Ice-T film, I wanted to make this film because rap saved my life.
When I first heard rap, I was totally into it. I came to New York and talked to the masters. They all told me the same thing: ‘Rap requires skill’.
This film is not about the money, the cars, the bling, the girls. But about craftsmanship, about how you write rap, what goes on in the heads of the masters.
We go from South Bronx to the West Coast. You'll see how powerful rap is, how it has changed the world.
This is no game, this is rap as art.”
So there's the introduction to this unique documentary in Ice-T's own words.
In the film Ice T meets pretty much all the rap greats: Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Ice Cube, Kanye West, Mos Def, Nas,Q-Tip, Run DMC, Snoop Dog and Xzibit, to name but a few. It has become an ode to the pioneers of a genre that has dominated American music over recent decades and has had an indelible influence upon what's going on at a musical level these days.
