A reading about the Venezuelan Alan Lomax or Harry Smith
Just like Alan Lomax and Harry Smith, Oswaldo Lares is an important ethno-musicologist from last century. Whereas Lomax and Smith mainly focus upon music from the US and Europe, Venezuelan Oswaldo Lares, a trained architect, made field-recordings of the traditional, native music of his country since the late ’60s.
During this tour, Guillermo Lares (Oswaldo’s son) and TAL label founder Stefan Schneider (see too: To Rococo Rot) present the ‘cross-cultural’ aspects and political backgrounds of Oswaldo Lares’ work.
By means of many audio and video files, they offer us a glimpse into Oswaldo’s archive and the rich Venezuelan musical tradition. They also discuss the conservation and digitalising of the various technical formats (rolls, tapes, LPs, digital files, radio programs, photos, notes, …) that Lares used.
