7:00 pm - SOUNDTRACK BY⊠Blue Flamingo
Blue Flamingo (or rather: Turkish Rotterdam-resident Ziya Ertekin) has a thing about 78 r.p.m.records. More than that even: he cherishes them, collects them and brings them back to people's attention once again by means of his famous DJ sets (1 turntable!) and by way of superb compilations (âCongo Jazzâ and also â78 r.p.m.â) full of jazz, rumba and exotica. The man often plays banjo during his sets and is otherwise blessed with an impressive voice. Basically: a stylish man after our own heart.
8:30 pm - Josephine Foster
âJosephine Foster is like one of my favorite singers.â (Devendra Banhart)
Eccentric American folk singer-songwriter. Appeared in the AB previously as support to Joan As Police Woman. She seems to be slowly reaching a broader audience with her latest album âGraphic As A Starâ â an album based upon poems by the American poetess Emily Dickinson (second half of the 19th century). At the time she was working as a singer for weddings and funerals but actually wanted to become an opera singer. However, she has now focused upon her eccentric singer-songwriter skills. The result is a handful of albums that catapult you into the early 20th century with their mood. âMore recentlyâ she's been reminding us of the impressive Karen Dalton and also of Shirley Collins and Joanna Newsom. She moved to Spain not long ago and performs with her husband and superb guitarist Victor Herrero.
9:45 pm - Susanna
âA true talent, she sings like a Norwegian mountain stream.â (Pitchfork)
âHer voice is extraordinary, wedding mountain-stream purity to a deep soulfulness.â (Mojo)
âWallumrĂždâs voice takes your breath away.â (The Observer)
AB is paying quite a bit of attention to Norwegian bands this year. Jaga Jazzist and Motorpsycho already passed in review earlier this year. You can also expect a series of Norwegian bands in the AB for the end of year season. But first it is the turn of Susanna or rather Susanna Wallumröd, frontlady and instigator of SUSANNA & THE MAGICAL ORCHESTRA, which has already released five albums on the impressive Norwegian label Rune Grammofon. She's already toured and worked together with the likes of Bonnie âPrinceâ Billy. Her unadulterated, minimal voice is a winner. As well as her frequent, unique and completely reconstructed cover versions of the likes of Joy Division (âLove Will Tear Us Apartâ), she also reworks songs by Thin Lizzy, Sandy Denny, Black Sabbath, Nico, Lou Reed or Abba without batting an eyelid. All drenched in the now unmistakable, minimal, Susanna-sound. Susanna will be accompanied by dear husband Helge Sten (see too: Deathprod, Supersilent,âŠ).
