"Sunn 0))) refers to modern classical, to Miles Davis and to mathematical sound analysis. It cleans your ears out but its no heavy metal." (De Standaard about ‘Monoliths & Dimensions’)
Sunn O)))'s mission is clearly: "to create trancelike soundscapes with the ultimate low-end bottom frequencies intended to massage the listener’s intestines into an act of defecation." Hmmm, quite a piece of scatalogical rhetoric. SUNN 0)))'s minimalistic doomcore (pronounced: Sunn) is heavily influenced by Earth and (the) Melvins and of course also by Black Sabbath (for the doom) and La Monte Young (for the minimalism). Their albums ‘White 1’ (with Julian Cope!) and ‘White 2’ are thoroughly recommended. Their latest album ‘Monoliths & Dimensions’ is now their seventh studio-album, it even received enthousiastic reviews in wider media circles. Amongst their fans you can just as easily find lovers of electronica, avant-garde, or free-jazz as of experimental rock. Including famous fans too: think film maker Jim Jarmush, who used Sunn 0))) music for his latest film ‘The Limits Of Control’, or think Portishead too, who say they were influenced by the band while making ‘Third’. Live SUNN O))) performs in monk's robes, surrounded by a mist of dry ice and certainly this time with Hungarian black-metal singer Attila Csihar as guest. O'Malley has certainly left far behind the mood of the bagpipe band that he once played in.
Opener will be duo Eagle Twin, with as pivotal figures frontman Gentry Densley (ex-Iceburn) and drummer Tyler Smith. Musically, to be situated between Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Earth, sunn 0))) and also (the) Melvins. Their debut ‘The Unkindness of Crows’ was released on the Southern Lord label run by Sunn 0))).
