vibrant no overdubs jazz, world, funk fusion
Snarky Puppy is an exciting American collective. Homebase is Brooklyn NY and, from there, they disperse themselves over all the best jazz festivals.
But there is more. Snarky Puppy is not only a septet of very brilliant musicians. They just as eagerly mix world-sounds as funk rhythms in their music. The late Don Pullen (of his African-Brazilian Connection) would definitely be glad to hear that.
The permanent core, based around guitarist-composer Michael League, can easily be extended into 25 semi-permanent members, including musicians who have earned their stripes with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Q-Tip, Morcheeba, Bilal, Justin Timberlake...
Just check out their 'real live, no overdubs' approach on that Thing Of Gold clip. Or try to get hold of their latest CD-DVDs (on the Ropadope label): GroundUP and Tell Your Friends.
The latter could very well have happened: apparently they already appeared last year in Brussels' Bar Du Matin, now they have many friends on Facebook and a reputation that will finally bring them to the ABClub, 'on a Saturday night!'
Another good word? 'The band has made a strong commitment to spreading a love of music and general positivity to a young generation looking for something real to hold on to.'
