Win For Life Dubstep Till You Drop [vol. I] feat. Skream vs Benga (back to back) (uk) + Mc Sgt Pokes (uk) + Gemmy (uk) + Addicted Kru Sound feat. Selah Sue (b)
AB has always had a soft spot for dubstep. Just remember previous visits from Skream (already from '07 ago!), Mary Anne Hobbs ('07), Pinch ('07), Mala (Digital Mystikz) ('07), Kode9 ('08), Benga ('08), Caspa & Rusko ('08) ? All of whom guaranteed explosively heated parties with a considerable crowd and wonderfully exciting ultra-deep 'woe-woe-woe-woe' sub-basses.
The genre has been on the map since releasing a number of impressive mix-albums. Remember the ground-breaking compilations from dubstep queen Mary Anne Hobbs (whose weekly BBC Radio 1 programme on Thursdays is highly recommended), the 'Dubstep All Stars' series or the compilations by underground UK-radio Rinse FM. Since the release of a few fully-fledged albums (think: Burial, Skream, Benga, Rusko, Distance, ...) there is absolutely no stopping the genre and dubstep's popularity has gone ballistic.
With thanks to Win For Life, the AB now organises a large-scale dubstep event twice yearly and in so doing we unite with colleagues from 'Untitled' (Trix, Antwerp) and 'Daily Dubstep' (Vooruit, Ghent). Also thanks to Win For Life, the ticket price is a treat too: for only 12 euro, you can get in and get it on ... till you drop!
DUBSTEP TILL YOU DROP. [vol. I] kicks right off with two dubstep icons (Skream and Benga), young hound Gemmy and also upcoming Belgian talent Addicted Kru Sound, with none less than Selah Sue behind the mic.
Skream (uk)
(Or rather: Olli Jones) wrote the indestructible dubstep anthem 'Midnight Request Line'. His album 'Skream!' is one of the foundations of dubstep. He's also a good friend of Benga, with whom he (and Artwork) also form the world's first live dubstep band: Magnetic Man. In 2009 he even achieved a Top 10 hit with his remix of the song 'In For The Kill' for La Roux.
Benga (uk)
(Or rather: Beni Uthman), together with his mate Skream, is part of the live dubstep project Magnetic Man, from which we can expect an album release this year. He signed off on a dubstep classic with his album 'Diary of an Afro Warrior'. In any case, Skream & Benga will feistily turn tables, back to back, during 'Dubstep Till You Drop'.
MC Sgt Pokes (uk)
At Benga and Skream?s request, Mc Sgt Pokes is coming along too. A formidable rhymester, he?s also a permanent guest of DMZ (London?s famous dubstep club) and is without a doubt one of the leading MC?s in the scene.
Gemmy (uk)
(Or rather: Gemmel Phillips) hails from Bristol. Together with Joker and Guido, he was there at the birth of the so-called purple sound. The purple sound? Yup, dubstep laced with retro video-game soundtracks and G-funk. His debut is soon to be released via the famous Planet Mu label
Addicted Kru Sound feat. Selah Sue (b)
We?re already unconditional fans of this dubstep collective from Leuven, even if it were only for that Wu-Tang Clan remix (of the song 'Iconoclasts'). MC on duty: none less than Selah Sue.
