Neo-classical meets electronica
Silence Is Sexy focuses on the so-called (new) contemporary classical composers that are increasingly gaining popularity in the field of ‘pop music’. They are engaged in the world of classical music but are willing to have electronica trickle through in their work, often resulting in a unique sound.
In early 2000, Rauelsson (the name Spaniard Raúl Pastor Medall performs under) heads to Portland, Oregon, to work on his music. He has already released 4 albums since 2008, including the score of the documentary From River To Sea (2012) and a collaboration with his friend and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick (Replica, 2011).
His new album, Vora, will be released in June 2013 on the inimitable Berlin label Sonic Pieces (the likes of: Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Erik K Skodvin, Dictaphone, Ryan Teague, …). Not only does this label release magnificent music, but all the artwork is handmade and of an unimaginable beauty.
Rauelsson seeks a new musical direction on Vora. He created compositions that served as the basis for this album while inspired by field-recordings from the Mediterranean and by the piano he found in his apartment (in Benicàssim) when he spent the winter of 2011 there. Back home in Oregon he further developed these pieces with strings and synths. He then headed to Berlin with this material, to work with Nils Frahm in his Durton Studio and mould everything into one fine whole.
The result is a unique, dark, cinematographic album, the live execution of which shall certainly be unique, in Huis23.
Just the thing for fans of Jacaszek, Nils Frahm,….
