A record collector's obsession with the oldest music in Western Europe changes his life.
Director Paul Duane, 78 mins, 2018
American musicologist Chris King is a legend, the most obsessive collector of old 78 rpm record, and also one of the only ones who can use modern technology to reveal their aural secrets and remaster them for a 21st century audience. For years, he lived in a world of nostalgia, listening to music from the distant past, until discovering the music of Epirus in Northern Greece changed his life.
The old 78 rpm records that he first fell in love with – containing barbaric and raw folk music that he believes connects us with our oldest forefathers – are still played to this day in the mountains of Epirus. During his travels there, Chris began to break out of his prison of nostalgia and find a home for himself for the first time in his life.
‘While You Live, Shine’ is an introduction to the most hypnotic and stunning music you’ve ever heard, a compelling journey to an isolated and half-forgotten land, as well as the portrait of a man who is late to find his spiritual home on the other side of the world.
“It’s both companion piece to, and a behind the scenes excavation of, musicologist Christopher King’s 2018 book Lament From Epirus – but it ends up being something far more powerful and disarmingly moving.” The Wire
