Rupa is a funny songstress. That's why her band is called The April Fishes. Together they make immensely enjoyable folk-rock, for fans of Les Négresses Vertes, Gogol Bordello, Jaune Toujours, Manu Chao, Beirut and especially Lhasa!
Here's an impressive quote from SF Weekly: 'If local singer Rupa were a movie, she would be Amélie meets Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown meets Latcho Drom meets Do the Right Thing. She'd be set in India and Berkeley...She would be (and, in fact, is) an instant cult classic among the smart, idealistic, international set.' SF here is short for San Francisco, the current homebase of this Indian lady who grew up in France and North America (and meanwhile also graduated as a doctor.)
'Extraordinary Rendition' is Rupa's debut CD and her small team: a multi-lingual and extremely charming disc (on the Cumbancha label and here via Munich.)
As TimeOut Chicago also shouted: 'Rupa & the April Fishes Global Agit-Pop'!
Support-act will be none less than Devon Sproule. Practise the name just quickly (in London they've already played the Shepherd's Bush Empire and also toured with Richie Havens!). Canadian and American and grew up in a hippie commune, but especially a clear voice and playful lyrics and presence. Between jazzy and country, or between Madeleine Peyroux and Gillian Welch!? She was already touring and releasing before she was 18, now her third CD is out: 'Keep Your Silver Shined'. We expect Devon Sproule as a duo with husband Paul Curreri, and from there there are then links to the The Killers via Devon Sproule And Her In-Laws and The Ex-Friends. But that's another matter. Come and discover Devon Sproule herself (and meanwhile just take a look at her vital Later With Jools appearance, on eg: www.myspace.com/devonsproule !?)
