'Mexico's Fast & Furious Guitar Duo'. That was what recently appeared on the front page of Songlines (that fine world-music magazine.) On the inside pages also: 'thoroughly genre defying... an enigma... a global mish-mash, and therefore, perhaps, the future?'. For those who can't believe it: ask anyone who was there last year in that well-filled, cooking AB! Only satisfied music-lovers who had experienced a sweltering, exciting and intense concert (and couldn't keep it to themselves.)
RODRIGO SANCHEZ & GABRIELA QUINTERO's unique musical mix is also more than sufficiently run-in on the road: purely instrumental, but varied and strongly attuned. But the question remains: is it world-music? Is it folk? Is it jazz? It's definitely not flamenco ? that's what they say themselves - but that same energy and passion is certainly there, brimming with 'Latin harmonies & rock structure'.
Rodrigo & Gabriela can count on friends like David Gray (remember AB February 2006?), Damien Rice or violinist Roby Lakatos. Their untitled breakthrough CD is out on Rubyworks (here via Pias) and produced by John Leckie (see also: Radiohead, Stone Roses, Muse...). With that same CD they immediately entered the Irish hit parade at number 1 and it continues to sell worldwide!
Not bad for two Mexicans without conservatory training, rather a heavy-metal past, and with experience at the school of hard knocks on (European) streets. Those who also like Apocalyptica will find this even more impressive and more charming (including fresh versions of Led Zep's 'Stairway To Heaven' and Metallica's 'Orion'). Satori!
