10 Years ago indie rock-band Pavement played their last concert in the Brixton Academy in London on 20 November 1999. Frontman Stephen Malkmus and the other band members had – according to their record company – turned their heads to 1. Start families 2. Sail around the world 3. Get into the computer industry 4. Dance 5. Get some attention.
Fast forward to 2009. On 15 September prominent blog Brooklyn Vegan reports that the band will perform again and that 4 concerts in New York have already been confirmed (and meanwhile been sold out in record time). The grape vine immediately went into overdrive: ‘Are they curating All Tomorrow’s Parties this year?’ ‘Are they playing at Primavera?’. Yup, Pavement is well and truly back again, as all these concerts have now been confirmed. Also including a concert on Belgian soil too, namely in the AB on Tuesday 18 May 2010.
Pavement is and remains the spearhead for an entire generation of music lovers. Attributed as slackers, named after their lazy, laid back playing style, the band attained an underground star status in the lo-fi scene (the antithesis of hi-fi, more often than not their albums had a poor sound mix). They worked themselves into the limelight right away with their debut ‘Slanted & Enchanted’ from 1992, but the real breakthrough came with the third album ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain’, from which the single ‘Cut Your Hair’ became an enormous hit. ‘Wowee Zowee’ from 1995 is the virtual close to their discography as the 2 albums that followed turned out to be mostly uninspired. In the aforementioned period, the band played twice in the AB: March '97 and November '99. Since 2002 the record company Matador has re-released the albums ‘Slanted & Enchanted’, ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain’, ‘Wowee Zowee’ and ‘Brighten The Corners’ , each time containing a cartload of unreleased bonus material.
The Pavement members weren't sitting still during their hiatus. Malkmus was the most active (with The Silver Jews but especially also solo) and performed regularly too, with or without The Jicks in the AB: February 2001, April 2001, April 2003, September 2005 and June 2008. Runner-up is Scott Kannberg who made 2 albums with Preston School Of Industry and just recently released a deserving solo album under his alias Spiral Stairs.
Don't miss this unique concert and relive a true piece of music history with brilliant songs like ‘Stereo’, ‘Range Life’, ‘Cut Your Hair’, ‘Shady Lane’, Rattled By The Rush’ and many many more.
Support act will be American indie-band Quasi, who already have a long list of albums to their name, of which the most recent is obtainable in Europe thanks to the most interesting Domino label. The trio consists of Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss and Joanna Bolme and we know these last 2 from Stephen Malkmus’ accompanying band, The Jicks. New album ‘American Gong’ will be released on 23 February.
