Absynthe Minded leader, radical solo-project
Oo°h: Ostyn, Bert Ostyn. Bert Ostyn from Absynthe Minded, but now with the great “o”s of solo. As - after eleven years of brotherhood, five albums and many, many concerts - Absynthe Minded has earned some well-deserved rest. So while the band charges its batteries – to be clear: there is absolutely no talk of a split – the frontman explores new musical horizons with a radical change of direction.
‘Compare it with moving into student accommodation’, according to Ostyn. ‘Your family and your home is still there, but you have the complete freedom to live alone for a while’.
What Bert doesn't do with his freedom: put on an acoustic guitar and opt for the predictable path.
What Ostyn does do with his freedom: Lots of beats. Lots of synths. Head deep into another world of sound.
'It's too soon to start throwing around musical points of reference’, says Ostyn of the solo debut that is to be released in early 2015, ‘but it will be more based on grooves. I don't draw any lessons from elsewhere, I just want to do what I feel like doing’.
What Ostyn doesn't do with his inclinations: ‘Slow songs. You won't find a single ballad on the album’.
What Bert does do with his inclinations: ‘Up-tempo songs. More electronic. Cutting and pasting’.
