Opeth makes a stop in AB with their Heritage Tour
Releasing ten intriguing albums over twenty years, magnificently transcending the (death metal) genre that they assisted in creating, and all the while remaining relevant and innovative. That's what Sweden's Opeth has casually been coming up with since their debut in ’95. As of old, they make magic with metal, blues, jazz, kraut- and prog-rock, plus some additional traditional Swedish folk music, on their latest album 'Heritage' ... once again, pulling a masterpiece out of their top hat. On their previous album, ‘Watershed’, lead man Akerfeldt traded in his deathly rasps for clean vocals, something he does again on ‘Heritage’… and something he does well! Even our much-loved criticaster Pitchfork gave Opeth’s latest work a digital thumbs-up.
“Handsomely arranged, masterful, exciting soundscapes and top entertainment” is what was to be read in Knack Focus after Opeth's searing visit to Graspop last year. What's more, the reviewer solemnly swore that “anyone who ever looks down their nose at prog, gets a smack in the face” . We’ll raise that, with a well-aimed kick in the marbles – you know, with army boots – if tickets aren't out the door quick-smart.
We'll even top it off with some top metal: Anathema will be getting the evening up to speed. These Liverpudlians have also been at it since the early ’90's and have evolved from doom metal in the direction of moody prog- and melancholy post-rock on their latest ‘Weather Systems’. The album has been swamped with superlatives and Goddeau gives you the following good advice in their review of the album: “Listen to ‘Weather Systems’ and look it straight in the eye. This is an album about your life, it could also become one of the albums of your life.”
It's already pretty obvious that there won't be much need for kicks in the marbles, it'll be hectic in the AB ticket shop.
