The blues! Mississippi delta blues? Hill country blues!
The blues! Mississippi delta blues? Hill country blues! Sharp guitar-bass-drums blues from Memphis and surrounding areas.
North Mississippi Allstars are mostly the American brothers Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals.) Family name: Dickinson = grew up in and around the studio and entourage of their pa: the illustrious musician/star-producer Jim Dickinson (see too: The Rolling Stones, Big Star, Willy DeVille, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Green On Red, Mudhoney...)
North Mississippi Allstars got off to a cracking start in 1996. They fitted right in with other sharp-edged, uncompromising acts like Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion, 20 Miles, The Campbell Brothers, R.L. Burnside... However their first telling CD title was only in 2000: Shake Hands With Shorty.
Also at the ABClub for the first time in that same year. After that, we lost track of them here. Though there were various other releases, such as the fabulous Electric Blue Watermelon.
But, from then on, the brothers divided their attention over various projects, including with Alvin Youngblood Hart, Valerie June... John Hiatt!
Until pa Jim passed away in 2010 and they again followed his ardent advice: play together! So we are pleased that our favourite difficult name - North Mississippi Allstars (yep: ss ss pp, but especially Allstars as one word) -, this blues-who's-who, is back together again and heading out on the road to AB. NMAS on the river Zenne!
North Mississippi Allstars now bring along Lightnin' Malcolm as bass-player and support-act. We hear and read that he's a master of the 'deep blues guitar groove' alias the 'juke joint blues', solo if need be and yet still strong, and that in the wake of heroes like R.L. Burnside or T Model Ford!
