AMON TOBIN en BONOBO are replaced by THE HEAVY en THE BUG & FLOWDAN!
Bad new and good news regarding the celebration of 20 Years Ninja Tune. First the bad news: Amon Tobin and Bonobo won't be able to attend. For Amon Tobin the reason is his application for a Green Card in the United States. The authorities involved won't give him permission to leave the country. The States also play a role in the absence of Bonobo, albeit a less binding one. He has just moved house to New York and, unfortunately, can't find the time to grace the Ninja Tune XX festivities in Europe with his presence.
The good news is that the folks behind the Ninja Tune label have found 2 very fine last-minute replacements. The Heavy shouldn't be unknown to you as they've already performed in the ABClub twice and still provide dirty northern soul with a good dose of garage-rock (think:The Sonics). Following an American tour this summer with Sharon Jones & The Dapkings, they scored a bit hit on that side of the Atlantic with ‘How You Like Me Now’.
In a completely different genre, they've also managed to get hold of none less than The Bug for Ninja Tune XX. His mother just calls him Kevin Martin but she probably knows nothing of his night-time activities; namely banging an exciting mix of dancehall, noise, grime and hip-hop through the speakers. Last year he showed us his most dubby side in the King Midas Sound project and then came, saw and conquered at the Domino festival. In the past, he has been active with God and Techno Animal. On 30 September he'll be in the good company of MC Flowdan.
In 1990, 2 young guys from London, Jonathan More and Matt Black, experienced their first small successes as producers and DJ’s for people like Yazz and Lisa Stansfield. Following an exhausting Japanese tour and dissatisfaction with their major-label they decided to start their own. The duo, better known today as Coldcut, began the NINJA TUNE label.
20 (twenty!) years later the label is a household name, inevitably, a pioneer, and at the same time homebase for a long line of performers who have drastically changed the face of electronica, hip-hop and dance. More than enough good reasons to blow out 20 candles... and in no small way! There will be a collector's box containing 6 CDs, 6 exclusive vinyl singles, a book about the label and so much more. In the months prior to this special release you can download exclusive mixes via de website www.ninjatunexx.net.
Over the past years, AB has been a constant factor in the Ninja Tune story. Various Ninja Tune nights have taken place here and some have even become legendary. Many performers have later appeared here under their own name, just think Amon Tobin and Roots Manuva. So AB certainly couldn't be missing in the exclusive list of cities in which Ninja Tune is to celebrate its twentieth anniversary world-wide. Aside from Paris, Berlin, London, Montreal, New York and Tokyo, one of the impressive Ninja Tune XX parties will be held here now too... and with an impressive line-up:
Amon Tobin completely won over a wound-up AB with his Foley Room concert in 2007. Since then he has mainly been working on his Two Fingers project but now he'll be getting back out there again, especially for the Ninja Tune anniversary. The label's nucleus couldn't be lacking and so Coldcut will also be a part of it all. They scored a serious hit a number of years ago with ‘Walk A Mile In My Shoes’. Last year, our favourite turntablist Kid Koala worked his way into the limelight with his live band The Slew but will be here now to display his incomparable turntable skills. The deep baritone of the British hip-hop scene – and regular visitor to the AB - Roots ‘Witness (1 Hope)’ Manuva will represent Ninja’s hip-hop label Big Dada! Bonobo will come to present their brilliant new CD ‘Black Sands’ and American sound-wizard Daedelus presents his ‘Righteous Fists Of Harmony’ (admittedly released on the Brainfeeder label). Those who thought that Ninja would only be looking back over 20 years has got it wrong: the stable's new and young blood will also have its place on this evening: the acoustic soul-folk of singer Andreya Triana, Austrian Dorian Concept (think: style-mates like Dabrye and Flying Lotus), Canadian Poirier (who navigates between electronica and hip-hop and has remixed the likes of Bonde Do Role and Kid Sister) and, last but not least, King Cannibal who always guarantees the darkest dubstep in London.
DJ FOOD & DK, otherwise known as Strictly Kev, is no stranger to the Ninja fans among us. This alias was originally the playground of artists like Coldcut and Patrick Carpenter, but when the latter decided to dedicate himself fully to The Cinematic Orchestra, Strictly Kev became the man behind DJ Food.
Dubstep is also the soil in which ESKMO from San Francisco has flourished. Following releases on respected labels like Warp and Planet Mu, he has recently signed to Ninja Tune. Obviously a label looking to the future.
In addition, VJ MOX will provide all visuals.
Also, in the month September, you can head to the ABrestaurant for an exhibition on Ninja Tune's vinyl artwork.
