country noir covers à la Alan Lomax
Moriarty is that fine French-American roots-chanson ensemble that can now effortlessly fill a Botanique or small AB. They do so with country noir, murder ballads, melancholy songs and other wonderful harmonies. See: their 1st visit here in 2009 during the enjoyably informative Alan Lomax homage.
Now entirely old school, so soon decided and already in the ABClub on Tuesday 22 April with a very original programme: Fugitives, alias a number of songs by Woodie Guthrie, Willie McTell, John Hurt, Hank Williams 'and other famous anonymous songwriters.'
Or as they say, in their best French: 'On y croisera une galerie de fugitifs en tous genres, amants assassins et bandits de grand chemin, redresseurs de torts, mères abandonnées par leurs hommes accros au jeu ou à la bouteille, cowboys exploités, une femme adultère et fière, un marchand de bonbons coquin, un veuf inconsolable.'
Listen and shiver, enjoy all that despair (and that outstanding voice à la Natalie Merchant!?).
