“Just about perfectly synchronized with the zeitgeist” (Pitchfork)
“Hypnotically hip” (NME)
“Songs die op hoofd en hart mikken… Luister, en je hoort iets broeierigs en zwoels, bijna een levend organisme.” (Humo)
“II is in al zijn onderhuidse grandeur een groeier van jewelste!” (Cobra.be)
“Een staaltje vakmanschap en inventiviteit. U moest al op weg zijn naar de dichtstbijzijnde platenzaak.” (Enola)
“Dromerig, opzwepend, hypnotiserend, broeierig, zwevend, zwoel, meeslepend, bedwelmend, intrigerend…” The long-awaited second LP (simply titled ‘II’) by Berlin's IDM (intelligent dance music)-trio Moderat is, according to the written press, clearly not to be summarized in one adjective. Four years after their much-acclaimed debut ‘Moderat’, Sascha Ring (Apparat) and Gernot Bronsert & Sebastian Szary (Modeselektor) sublimely unite their clashing styles –Modeselektor’s cross-grained, pumping breakbeats and Apparat’s refined, intoxicating soundcarpets– in this genuine electronic supergroup.
The vibe of the album is desolate and at the same time dreamy. Ring's passionate vocals and airy, elusive synths hovering over pared down breakbeats and roaming percussion. ‘Milk’ - a ten minute long epos that begins in a restrained, almost hypnotic manner and ends in a rousing climax - is, aside from the pièce de résistance of the album, also the prefect reflection of ‘II’. Artwork and live projection are still the work of video-artist/art design collective Pfadfinderei, that also provided the impressive video for first single ‘Rusty Nail’ from debut ‘Moderat’.
Moderat dropped by Kiewit, Hasselt, in 2009 and the three appeared high on the billing of the Bozar Electronics Arts Festival in late September ‘13. Sascha Ring was forced to miss that date though, due to a motorbike accident, so their appearance in AB will be the first Belgian visit since ‘II’ saw the light of day. Be sure to check out the video for ‘Gita’ that has been used as the soundtrack for the UNICEF campaign around domestic violence. “Working together with UNICEF means being part of something for the greater good.”
